The living members of my family tree

I have been thinking that it would be great to include stories of the living members of my family.  I just am not sure about putting too much information on for public view.

If I don't get their stories now I may wait too late as I have done with the generations that are gone already. Even the young members of the family have stories that need to be recorded now.  I know I had a brother die at 35 years of age and my first husband died at 31.  I have memories of them but they have been gone for a long time now and it is harder to recall some things.  If I had recorded details when they were here it would have been much better. I know my children would love to have more information about their father's years of growing up as they were quite young when he died.

Does anyone have suggestions about how to handle this and still protect the privacy of the family?

I will get back to the family history post tomorrow.

  2. I think you're right to be concerned about privacy online, particularly where living people are concerned, but do write your family's stories. Print copies out and disperse them to interested people, keep backups on CDs, etc. While you're at it, don't forget to write your own story too. :)

  4. Betty... you should be careful about the living. Before my mom died, I often referred to as simply mom. Same thing with my aunts and grandma. Well, my grandmother passed away last January but my aunts are still living. So I just use the reference of relationship rather than name. My thought is this... people can still identities if they want to, but I'm not going to make it easy. Make sense?

Another thought, is that you could have a private blog for the living and only allow family to read that. I'll admit I don't read the private blogs because they don't go to my Google Reader. However, it is an option.

  5. I would be very interested to read stories of the living. I understand how some might not want their past open to the public. Not quite sure how to go about protecting them, but feel that the benefits would outweigh the harm, especially if it was a private blog. I am going to be 25 years old in March, and know almost nothing of my family outside my immediate sibling and Mother. I remember hearing stories about how close My Aunt Betty was with my sister Crystal and I wondered what happened with the younger children. I have very few memories of Grandma Plummer, also the only ones I do have are when she was already in the nursing home. I wish I knew the stories to tell my children and let them know who their Great-Grandmother was. I don't even know much about my Mother's siblings, let alone further back. I just think that it would be a greater blessing to give the history to the generations who don't have it.
